Deck staining and oiling protects timber from weathering while enhancing or changing its appearance. There are many different decking oils and stains available, each with different strengths, maintenance requirements and finished looks.

What is the difference between deck staining and deck oiling?
The terms overlap considerably. Deck oils can be clear or pigmented, while stains are generally used to add or change colour as well as protect the timber. Many modern decking products effectively do both.
Rather than getting too caught up in the terminology, we focus on choosing the right finish for the timber, condition of the deck and the result you are trying to achieve.
Does my deck need to be sanded before staining or oiling?
Not always. New timber, bare timber or a deck being regularly maintained may only require the appropriate cleaning and preparation before recoating.
If the existing coating is failing, peeling, uneven or incompatible with the new finish, the deck may need to be sanded back before staining or oiling. We can assess the existing coating and let you know how much preparation is actually required.
How long does deck stain or oil last?
It varies greatly. The coating used, amount of sun and weather exposure, timber species, colour and condition of the deck can all affect how quickly the finish weathers.
Some exposed decks or clear finishes may require maintenance relatively frequently, while sheltered decks and other coating systems can last considerably longer. The important thing is to recoat at the right time rather than waiting for the finish to completely fail, and we can help you work out when that is.
